Saul Bass & Henri

I have received my copy of Henri’s Walk to Paris, illustrated by Saul Bass, story by Leonore Klein.
This is the only children’s book ever illustrated by Saul Bass, first published in 1962. Prior to this book being re-printed in January 2012, copies of this book have been going for hundreds of dollars.

Henri’s Walk to Paris is the story of a young boy who lives in Reboul, France, who dreams of going to Paris. One day, after reading a book about Paris, he decides to pack a lunch and head for the city.

Filled with the simple, colourful and bold shapes that Bass is recognised for, If you like the work of Saul Bass, this book should be in your collection.

Ways of Seeing, John Berger

“Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognises before it can speak”  J.Berger

This book was brought to my intention back in University. I read it then 5 years ago and have picked it up several times since. Ways of Seeing shows you how to look at paintings, and has taught me how to read them, evaluate them and I think it has changed the way I now look at paintings.

“The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled” J.Berger

Written across 7 essays, thay can be read in any order and is packed full of images to illustrate and support the text. I recommend this book to anyone who loves art, or to anyone wishing to understand art a little more.

“One of the most stimulating and the most influential books on art” J.Berger

I’ve been given this great book with fascinating images of clouds. This one here is one of my favourites, titled, Land of the long white cloud, photographed in New Zealand. This is giving me some ideas for how to paint sky’s, and incorporate these shapes and colours into some abstract paintings.

I recently picked up my copy of the ‘The Book of Inspiration’ by Computer Arts. All 192 pages are packed full of ideas on design,  illustration, colour and technique. Chapters include Showcase, Icons, Inspiration workshop and Brief Encounter. Creative Icons include Neville Brody, Johnathan Barnbrook and Alan Aldridge.

This is a great book to either get stuck in and read or just to pick up and look at the pictures.
