Broadsheet Bistro is open
Fraser Suites Edinburgh on St Giles Street, recently opened their Bistro on the lower ground within their serviced apartments. The Broadsheet Bistro required a logo and various printed menu and A-board material. The logo device illustrates the skyline that runs from the Bistro along down to Edinburgh Castle. The menu’s completed include, Room Service – A5 double sided with matt lamination, a breakfast menu and an A3 lunch and full dinner menu which was printed on recycled newspaper stock, to tie in with the Broadsheet concept.

Night sky, swirling clouds…
Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh.
I love this piece by Van Gogh, the deep blue night sky filled with yellow, white and blue swirling clouds, the bright half moon in the top right and the detailed small town in the foreground . The exaggerated elements of this piece allow your eyes to keep moving around, following the swirls and picking out the stars then you get hit with this oversized dark, tree like structure before resting on the calm, sleepy town.
This piece is very atmospheric, although there are many elements, some could say some elements may be overpowering, but with the soft use creams and yellows, against the strong use of clouds this piece is perfectly balanced.
This print is framed and stands alone in my living room.
Boxes, bubble wrap and tape
I have moved house at the start of the year and as time goes on I’m unpacking numerous amounts of books, more books, paper, paints and even more books. I never realised the amount of stuff I have until I gathered it together, put it in the one place and then tried to lift and carry it between vans, driveways and up staircases…
I unfortunately won’t have my internet up and running until early March. My blog posts and all forms of social networking have dried up and will no doubt remain quiet until then.
That’s not to say i’ve stopped reading, writing and being creative, I will be back in touch soon.
Should a designer have a style?
I recently posted this question on linkedin – Should a designer have a style? Or are you better to leave yourself open to all challenges and work towards satisfying the clients needs?
It opened up some great, valuable points. The outcome is as follows;
It suggested a designer should/will have their own personal flair and style. But you have to work hard to keep up and adapt within an ever changing marketplace. Although it is important not to box yourself into a certain set style. The client is the most important factor, and designers may have to change their style to service the client.
“Too many people that get pigeon holed as one kind of artist are not working right now” Cheryl Cook
“There are some specific places that did not hire me because my portfolio wasn’t chocked full of whatever they were looking for, but it’s more rare in that a company wants a single-vision designer and not somebody adaptable”. Lynne H
“I have a style, but it doesn’t show in all my work because the clients needs come first and foremost.” Steve O’Connor
